Sciatica Treatments

Sciatica pain is a very common condition. In their lifetime, two in five Americans will suffer from it. Dr. Andrea Hogan and Dr. Mike Hogan of Hogan Family Chiropractic in Frisco, TX offer a variety of treatments to help to mitigate sciatic pain.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is pain that results from compression of the sciatic nerve. This nerve begins in the lower back and goes over the buttocks and down the back of each leg. The pain may be very mild, or it can be intense and very disruptive to your ability to function. Most of the time, pain is only on one side of the body.

Causes of sciatica

The sciatic nerve is a major nerve, it is the largest and longest nerve in the body and when it gets irritated, there is a lot of pain. Two common causes of sciatica are herniated or bulging discs and the piriformis muscle which, when it gets overused or injured, tightens up and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. However, there are other causes including pregnancy, obesity, bone spur, spinal stenosis, or a misalignment of the vertebrae.

Treatment for sciatica pain

Treatment for sciatica pain includes spinal adjustments, acupuncture, spinal decompression, trigger point therapy, therapeutic exercises, and electric muscle stimulation.

Spinal adjustments

Chiropractic spinal adjustment is a hands-on therapy that realigns your spine and your pelvis to relieve the pressure on your sciatic nerve.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture uses very thin needles inserted into areas the chiropractor targets to relieve the pain in the sciatic nerve. This process works very effectively in conjunction with the other therapies the practice provides.

Spinal decompression

Spinal decompression is provided by a machine with a precise computer program that decompresses the spine and pulls the bulging disc back into the place where it belongs. Pressure is removed from the sciatic nerve.

Trigger point therapy

If tight muscles are causing your sciatic pain, with this therapy the tightness can be released and the pain relieved. Your chiropractor will find the trigger point and apply the correct pressure for release.

Therapeutic exercises

By learning therapeutic exercises, you will be able to help yourself to relieve pressure on your sciatic nerve when you are away from the chiropractor.

Electric muscle stimulation

This therapy stimulates the muscles and causes them to contract. When they get tired, they relax and this helps relieve the pain.
